2023 Training Flow Update

2023 Training Flow Update

We are thrilled to announce a new and improved training procedure at the New York ARTCC that will enhance your learning experience and help you excel in your respective majors. After two and a half years of valuable insights gained from the Project Philadelphia training program, our training staff has diligently reviewed its ups and downs. As a result, we have decided to implement amendments that will strengthen our training program at the ARTCC.

Our primary goal is to emphasize standardization, control quality, and active engagement within the New York airspace. Consequently, we will be replacing Philadelphia as the initial facility assigned to all students. Current students at Philadelphia will be reassigned to their respective N90 majors, and new students will be immediately assigned an N90 major upon enrollment. This approach will enable students to familiarize themselves with the complexities, diversity, and unique characteristics of the N90 airspaces from the beginning, ensuring consistency and setting clear expectations early on.

To further enhance the training experience, we will make significant improvements to sweat box requirements and training session standards. These enhancements aim to deliver the highest quality of controllers. Additionally, we will introduce checkouts and signoffs for each position to ensure competency and adherence to training standards before progressing to the next position. To accomplish this, students will be required to control on the network for a minimum of 20 hours for every position they are certified in before attempting a sign-off.

Furthermore, our dedicated training staff members will be more readily available when actively controlling the New York airspace, to provide live guidance to our controllers. This invaluable support will help you navigate any challenges and provide assistance as you refine your skills. Please reference the Training Procedure for the new detailed flow.

Lastly, attached is a link to a Google Form for individuals interested in joining our training staff. While we maintain stringent guidelines, we greatly value the enthusiasm and dedication of those interested, as they represent the future of our ARTCC. We look forward to your responses and the opportunity to engage with potential candidates.

We look forward to your active participation and success in the New York ARTCC. For any questions, please contact me via email at [email protected]

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  1. Why the change?
After thorough evaluation, the training staff has decided to relocate the training procedure from Philadelphia to the New York metropolitan area. This move will enable students to gain early familiarity with the unique challenges of controlling New York City, where three of our four majors are located. Major-specific training will be strengthened to ensure the highest quality among our controllers. Even after certification, our dedicated training staff will continue to provide occasional feedback and support to controllers while controlling. Standardized evaluation processes will be implemented to ensure consistency in assessments. Additionally, we have identified the need to tailor our training program to address specific issues observed in Philadelphia. By emphasizing standardization, control quality, familiarity with New York, and active engagement, we can further enhance our training efforts and achieve the added benefit of preventing resource misuse.
  2. What happens now?
Efficiently and promptly, all students will be transitioned to their N90 majors. Once PHL certified students have successfully completed the necessary test(s), they will be transferred to their respective N90 majors. It is important to note that they will not have the option to continue training at Philadelphia until their first N90 major is completed.
  3. How will this affect my testing?
Students who are currently undergoing testing for a new PHL certification will have their test results nullified, and they will be guided to focus on learning their N90 majors.
  4. Will this further delay my training?
Regrettably, providing a direct answer to this question is challenging due to numerous variables involved. Currently, the New York ARTCC consists of over 220 controllers and approximately 15 members of the training staff. Training availability is made to the best extent possible, considering real-world obligations and summer scheduling. However, the posting of training sessions may not always align perfectly with every student's schedule, adding an additional layer of complexity to the situation.
  5. Will there be changes to the booking system?
The booking system on the website will remain unchanged, with the only modification being the type of training sessions students should seek to book. All students will focus on scheduling N90 major training sessions instead of training at Philadelphia.
  6. What if I have a session scheduled already?
The training staff will give you ample time to study the material and schedule a one off session with you at your assigned major facility to replace your canceled session due to this change.
